AEO and GEO describe the same strategic shift: optimizing presence for engines that answer, synthesize, and cite. AEO is often clearer for leadership because it names the desired outcome: becoming a trusted answer. GEO is the market term many teams use for the same generative-search adaptation. AI Search is the broader environment where that visibility is won or lost.
ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, and Perplexity do not cite sources the same way. Profound research shows that each engine places trust in different source types, including encyclopedic knowledge bases, communities, video, professional networks, and specialist media. Visibility in one platform does not guarantee visibility in another, so reporting must separate performance by engine.
Query fanout is the breakdown of a question into multiple subqueries that answer engines use to gather evidence and synthesize a final response. In practice, this changes editorial planning: optimizing only for the main query is not enough. To win coverage and citations, you need to map subquestions, group them by intent, and convert them into sections, FAQs, comparisons, and supporting assets.
In AI search, the strategic unit is not the isolated keyword but the brand-relevant prompt: the question or task that expresses a real need, context, and intent across the ICP journey. The costliest mistake is not just failing to appear in AI answers, but tracking broad or curiosity-driven prompts that do not influence discovery, consideration, comparison, adoption, or expansion.
SEO and GEO do not compete with each other; they operate at different layers of digital discovery. SEO remains essential for relevance, crawlability, and organic traffic. GEO adds optimization for AI-generated answers, focusing on presence, citation, extraction, and semantic understanding in LLM-based interfaces.
AEO, or Answer Engine Optimization, is the practice of designing pages to answer questions clearly, directly, and in a way that is easy for AI systems to extract and cite. It improves answer visibility by combining answer-first copy, explicit FAQs, strong headings, semantic structure, and editorial trust signals.
GEO is the practice of structuring content, entities, and editorial signals so a brand is easier to understand, extract, and cite in AI-generated answers. In practice, GEO complements SEO by prioritizing clear responses, trustworthy context, and semantic organization built for answer engines and conversational discovery.
Schema.org helps search engines and AI systems understand page type, authorship, hierarchy, and other important content signals. It does not guarantee citation on its own, but it reduces ambiguity and improves semantic readability when applied consistently to the right page template.
llms.txt is a simple file published at the root of a site to point language models toward important pages and context. It can help with curation and discovery, but it does not replace information architecture, sitemap quality, useful content, or strong editorial trust signals.
